You need to update to It's version I'm sure I was able to open app store and see there was no updates available. I doubt pre iMacs will enjoy a new OS Payments won't work on any browser I think.
I tried on Safari and downloaded Chrome and tried that, but you either get an error message saying the browser hasn't met security levels or it just gets a blank screen on the visa page. I'm pretty sure that you can't get the latest Chrome for something that old either, but I might be wrong. I tried creating a bootable USB drive, but it told me that it wasn't compatible with my computer.
When I talked to Apple about it, it was because of the graphics cards - they stopped supporting their older cards. Considering that I can still find ways to play games from the 's, this doesn't make complete sense to me. However, with the transparency of their icons and the such - maybe they really are relying on the new hardware?
That said, both Leopard WebKit nightlies and TenFourFox will give you a browser that's up to date enough to do online payments. First check with the serial number on everymac.

Keep in mind, moving beyond Leopard, software compatibility may be an issue. I'd research that before making the jump. I would also simply go to the Apple store Genius Bar where normally they install whatever you want. But I am surprised you could run El Capitan.
